If You’re Not Growing Your Wealth, You’re Falling Behind

Here’s How to Fix It

In 2007, Deamonte Driver, a 12-year-old boy from Maryland, faced a devastating consequence of poverty.

He developed an abscessed tooth, an issue that could have been treated with a simple $80 dental procedure. However, his family, unable to afford dental care, was forced to delay treatment.

Deamonte’s mother, Alyce, had been struggling to find a dentist who would accept Medicaid. When she found help, the infection had spread beyond his tooth and into his brain.

The situation quickly worsened.

Deamonte underwent emergency brain surgery and weeks of hospital treatment, but the infection had spread too far. Despite the best efforts of doctors, he passed away. A preventable death, all because of financial hardship.

His story is not unique. Millions of low-income families face impossible choices every day: Do I pay rent or take my child to the doctor? Do I buy groceries or fix my car so I can keep my job?

The harsh truth is that poverty doesn’t just limit what you can buy, it can take years off your life. The wealthy have access to the best healthcare, the best food, and the best safety nets. But for those struggling financially, even minor setbacks can be catastrophic.

The reality of financial struggle means small problems, like a simple toothache, can spiral into fatal consequences.

This is why escaping financial insecurity isn’t just about money but survival.

It’s about ensuring that no parent has to bury their child over something as simple as a dental visit. And the first step is recognizing that waiting for help is not an option. The time to take control is now.
